Chewy Flour Tortillas

So the first component of yesterday’s dinner was an adaptation of Patricia Mitchel’s Chewy Flour Tortillas. I have never made these before, but they were very simple and tasted great. After letting the dough sit, I grilled these in a med-low cast iron skillet for 60 seconds on each side and voila – yummy!

Chewy Flour Tortillas

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

2 tsp vegetable oil

3/4 cup warm non-flavored soy milk

1 T dry herbs (I used Basil)

1: Mix the dry ingredients together.

2: Add the oil and warm milk. Having the soymilk warm made the dough much easier to knead.

3: Knead the dough for 2 minutes

4: Allow the dough to rest for 15 minutes.

5: Preheat the skillet

6: Divide the dough into 8 pieces

7: Roll the dough out flat

8: Cook in skillet 60 seconds each side

The cooking time will vary by the heat of your skillet. If the cast iron is properly seasoned, this can be done with very little additional oil.

  1. I eat tortillas so much I will at some point have to try making my own tortillas. Yours look perfect! It doesn’t seem all that complicated either. Awesome!

  2. It was a breeze and they were really good. It’s nice making your own so you know exactly what is in it and the quality of ingredients!
